About the city:

Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital city and also home to the Scottish Government. It is the second most populous city in Scotland following Glasgow with a population or roughly around 464,000 people, and is the second biggest financial center in the United Kingdom behind London.

In terms of demographics Edinburgh is very culturally diverse, 47% of the non-UK-born population residing in Edinburgh are of European origin which ranks Edinburgh higher than any other city in the United Kingdom in this respect.

Edinburgh Castle is one of the major attractions tourists want to tick off their to see list. Situated on a rock, human occupation of this settlement has been dated all the way back to the Iron Age, and the royal castle has existed there since the 12th Century and has been in the middle of many historical conflicts such as the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite rising of 1745.

Another famous landmark is Holyrood Palace, an official residence of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II who stays at the house at least a week a year. St. Giles Cathedral is the prominent Christian place of worship in all of Scotland, alongside the two aforementioned landmarks, it makes up quite a proportion of Edinburgh’s skyline as the three landmarks are situated on the Royal Mile, which is located in Edinburgh’s Old Town. The old and the new town in Edinburgh were built in the 18th and 19th Centuries respectively and are marked as UNESCO World Heritage sites which have been managed by Edinburgh World Heritage since 1999. All of these attractions make Edinburgh behind London the United Kingdom’s second most popular tourist destination attracting over one million overseas visitors per year.
