About the city:

Rome is the capital city of the European country of Italy, it also serves as the capital of the Lazio region. The population of the city sits at around 2.8 million people making it the largest city in Italy and the fourth most popular in the European Union. It also has a border with the Vatican City which is the smallest country in the world.

Rome is one of the oldest cities in the world spanning over 28 centuries with the date of its founding sitting at around 753 B.C. It was the former capital of the Roman Kingdom, Republic and Empire respectively and is highly regarded as the birthplace of Western Civilization. Rome due to it’s heritage has a plentiful amount of landmarks that draws tourists from around the world. These include the famed Coliseum, a three-tiered Amphitheatre that was used for gladiatorial games during the Roman Empire, the Roman Forum (an area of excavated Roman Temples), Renaissance landmarks such as St. Peters Basilica, which was a church built late in the era and could hold up to 20,000 worshippers and Pantheon, a temple built around 118 to 125 A.D containing a dome and renaissance tombs including that of Raphael’s.

Christian landmarks include the world famous Sistine chapel which is best known for hosting the 16th Century ceiling painted by Michelangelo. Other popular tourist attractions that are worth visiting include the Vatican Museums which consists of multiple galleries of classical and renaissance art masterpieces including the Sistine Chapel frescoes, and the Piazza Navona, which is an elegant square in the center of the city which traces its roots back to the 1st Century A.D. with a classical fountain at its center and is home to street artists and bars.
