About the city:

Toulouse is a French city that is the capital of the region of Occitanie. It lies on the banks of the River Garonne and is 93 miles away from the Mediterranean Sea. It is the fourth largest city in the whole of France with an urban population of around 466,000 people and a metropolitan population of around 1.3 million people.

It is the home of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the headquarters of aerospace manufacturing giant Airbus, as well as the European Headquarters of Intel and the Toulouse Space Centre. The University of Toulouse is also one of the oldest in Europe having been founded in the year 1229 with a student population of more than 103,000 students making it the fourth largest university in France.

The city hosts two UNESCO World Heritage sites, with one of these being the Canal Du Midi which is also shared with other cities and the Basilica of St. Sernin, the largest Romanesque building in Europe that was designated in 1998 as it lied on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route. Toulouse has quite a diverse demographic and the city has seen a sharp increase in its GDP and population thanks to the rise of the aerospace and high tech industries.

Prominent landmarks in Toulouse that are popular amongst visiting tourists range from the Capitole de Toulouse which is the heart of the municipal administration of Toulouse and contains the city hall; it is also the site where St. Saturninius was martyred.

Other landmarks include the Basilica of Saint-Sernin which is a medieval basilica with relics of 128 saints inside its walls and a thorn that was said to have come from a crown of thorns. There is also a space-themed attraction called the Cite de l’espace which includes an IMAX Cinema, a planetarium and exhibitions.
