About the city:

Berlin is the capital of Germany and is the most populous city in Germany with a population of 3.7 million making it the second most populous city in the European Union after London, and straddles two rivers, being the River Spree and the River Havel.

Berlin traces its roots back to the 13th century as being part of an historic trade route. It has been the capital of various empires during its existence such as the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, The Weimar Republic and the Third Reich. The Berlin Wall situated in the city is also famous due to its marking the two halves the city were split into (East and West Berlin) following Germany’s defeat in the Second World War.

In the modern day, it boasts it’s status as a world city of culture, politics, media and science. Of the 3.7 million inhabitants, around 676,00 are registered as a foreign nationality, with the most popular of these being Turkish, Polish, Syrian and Italian. After the Berlin Wall, the most famous landmark is without doubt the Brandenburg Gate; it was built in the 18th Century and was a prominent landmark during the Prussian rule and was built on the site of a former city gate marking the road from Berlin to Brandenburg.

Going back to the Berlin Wall, this divided Berlin both physically and ideologically between 1961 to 1989 with the Soviet Union controlling the East and the US and Europe controlling the west. Demolition of the wall began in 1990 and was finished in 1992 uniting the city after over three decades of segregation. Berlin also contains the east-side open-air gallery which contains murals all painted along 1316m stretch of the Berlin wall. Another popular tourist hotspot is Museum island which consists of the northern half of an island in the spree river which contains 7 museums which all make up the Berlin state museums.
