About the city:
Mallorca is the largest of the Spanish Balearic Islands, located in the Mediterranean with a population of around 859,000. Like many of the other islands in the groups, it is an extremely popular holiday destination, particularly with Brits and Germans. The airport on the island is one of the busiest in the whole of Spain including the mainland, used by around 28 million passengers last year.
The islands name derived from Latin means ‘Larger Island’, which makes sense in contrast to Menorca. Menorca is one of the smaller islands, with its name in Latin meaning ‘Smaller Island’, this is derived from it’s contrast with the size of Mallorca. It has a population of roughly around 91,000. Both of the islands came under rule of the Ancient Roman Empire.
One of the most iconic landmarks on the larger island of Mallorca is situated in the capital, Palma. This is the Palma Cathedral, a gothic Roman Catholic church and is the highest of all gothic cathedrals, and sits atop the former citadel of the former Roman City, between the Royal and Episcopal palaces. Other landmarks in Mallorca include Bellver castle which is a gothic style castle which is at the center of the capital Palma and was built in the 14th century for King James II of Majorca and is one of few surviving circular castles in Europe. It is now under civilian rule and is one of the main tourist attractions of the island and it also acts as the seat for the city museum.
Another landmark is the Royal Palace of La Almudaina which is a former Arabian fort used by the Royal Family for various events still to this day.
